Throwing away three points in the derby at the weekend was the final nail in the coffin of Stefano Pioli. Inter’s poor record in big games under Pioli has been dreadful and Suning want a proven winner on the Inter bench next season.
Having flirted with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte recently, Suning has once again turned their attention back to Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone becomes the number one target.
Simeone is of course a former Inter player who has often said he’d love to come back to San Siro as a coach. He is close with Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti and would be welcomed back with open arms by the Inter fans.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Suning are prepared to giving Simeone unprecedented powers at Inter to be essentially both coach and director of sport on a five-year contract worth a reported €50 million.
What Simeone’s arrival would mean for sporting director Piero Ausilio, who is reported ready to sign a new contract extension is unknown.
Simeone’s current contract at Atletico Madrid expires in June 2018, and there have been reports that El Cholo does not have a buyout clause in his contract, meaning he could leave for free this summer.
After Simeone, there is a big drop in the quality of candidates being mentioned, including Hull City manager Marco Silva, who could well see his side get relegated this season.
