Drastic Changes At Inter

by Philip Mboya on June 6, 2010

Inter Milan are set to undergo drastic changes this summer as they seek to repeat their history making feat in the new season. With Mourinho out, there is still much uncertainty as to who will be his replacement. Although the Italian media has strongly linked former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez with a move to the San Siro, Inter chief Massimo Moratti is yet to make any official contact with the Spaniard.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Benitez could be Inter’s new coach in the next 2 days. Mr. Moratti is expected to meet Benitez in Sardegna for official talks which are expected to end positively. With at least 80 million Euros from Inter’s exploits last season, Mr. Moratti will do all it takes to land Benitez’s signature. My only worry is whether Rafa is the best choice.

In my opinion Guus Hiddink would have been Inter’s best choice and a much safer bet but that decision is not up to me. Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has already hinted that he may follow Benitez to the San Siro which again would mean restructuring the current WINNING side (emphasis on winning). The saying If it ain’t broke don’t fix it could not be more relevant.

I have never been a fan of the Argentine and to be honest i am still trying to bring myself to terms with his inclusion in Argentina’s squad at the expense of Riquelme! A move to Inter for Mascherano will mean either Stankovic, Motta or Sneidjer playing second fiddle in Benitez pecking order. However, that will only happen when and if Benitez puts pen to paper.

Then there is Balotelli, Quaresma and Maicon who are still very unsure about their future. Inter can do without Quaresma, however, Balotelli and Maicon are vital to the success of the club.

Napoli have officially approached Balotelli with an offer but a move to the city in the sun for the Italy international is very unlikely. Maicon on the other hand seems to be changing his mind faster than a chameleon changes his colour. After stating that he would like to join Real, the Brazilian defender has come out to say that he has no intention of leaving the Nerazzurri.

With summer transfers just starting to get momentum, it remains to be seen whether Inter will remain with or build on their existing squad.
