The Rafa Benitez era at Inter Milan began in style last night in Baltimore as Inter beat Manchester City 3-0, in a night that saw former Inter player Patrick Viera sent off for a straight red card for a foul on Marco Materazzi after only 21 minutes.
Inter made full use of the extra man and went ahead after 38 minutes when winger Nsofor Victor Obinna opened the scoring in the 38th minute, after City were reduced to 10 men following Patrick Vieira’s dismissal on 21 minutes after a reckless foul on Inter defender Marco Materazzi.
Obinna goal came off a deflection as did his second after 54 minutes, but make no mistake about it. Inter were much better than a Man City team that was playing its fourth game of th epreseason.
If there was an element of luck with Inter’s first two goals, there was nothing lucky about the third; a 35-yard screamer from Cristiano Biraghi.
“I am really pleased with the performance of the team. They played really well,” Inter manager Rafael Benitez told reporters after the game. “Our idea is to improve our fitness and also give time to our younger players on the pitch. We got to do both.”
