Mariga Makes History

by Philip Mboya on February 3, 2010

McDonald Mariga made history when he became the first Kenyan to play in the Serie A when he signed with former giants Parma in 2007. Now, the 22 year old seems to be continuing in that fashion as he has struck another amazing deal that will see him don the black and blue stripes of Inter for the next two and half years. Inter’s president Massimo Moratti said Mariga was “the best thing that ever happened to the club” and i could not agree anymore.

Okay maybe that statement is a little bit to bold but i definitely agree that Inter made a wise decision in signing Mariga. Mariga is a holding midfielder and with the departure of Patrick Vieira, Mourinho was looking to add more muscle to his squad. I have watched Mariga play and what strikes me most about him, is his ability to hold the ball while keeping an eye open to set up his team mates.

Mariga’s stroy is somewhat like a dream. Here in Kenya, folks just can’t get enough of the fact that they now have a son of theirs plying his trade with one of the biggest clubs in the world. Although bent on moving to England, i think Mariga’s move to the north of Italy is far much better. Man city may be the richest club in the world, but they don’t  come anywhereclose to Inter’s success and prestige.  What’s left is for Mariga to cement his position in a team that has big names all fighting for the some playing time. Rumours have it that Mourinho has inlcuded him in their Italian Cup semi final game against Fiorentina. Whether is true or not, one thing is for sure, Mariga’s star is on the rise.
