Mourinho’s Less Than Warm Welcome

by Philip Mboya on June 1, 2010

It seems like everyone is wishing Jose Mourinho misfortune in his new coaching role at Real Madrid. Mourinho who made Italian history with Inter (yes i will milk this for all its worth) is not yet even a day old in his job and he has already received some stinging remarks from his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini and  Joan Gaspart a former president of his old club Barcelona.

Manuel Pellegrini is obviously upset in the manner in which he was dismissed and he has every right to be. According to the Chilean, he only met Florentino Perez once during his stint as coach. This was back in August last year during his Unveiling ceremony. Since then Pelegrini has had no contact with Perez until last week when he sacked. OUCH!

There is no way to prove how true these remarks are however where there is smoke, there definitetly is fire. Pellegrini also offered the ‘special one’ a word of advice:

”Coaches never last long at Real Madrid,” he said. “I don’t think I made any particular mistakes. I trained for five years in Spain and knew that coaches never last long there.

“In my view this is a strategic error and I hope that sooner or later they can fix it.”

Strategic error or not, Mourinho has already set his first target and that is winning the Champions League. Just how long would it take no one knows. It took him 2 years with Inter but with Real’s financial prowess and players like Kaka (if he does not move), Ronaldo, Higuain, and Casillas, a European victory next season is not impossible.

Joan Gaspart the former Barcelona President however has a different frame of mind.

“I don’t wish him any success at all. In fact, having gone to Real Madrid, I hope he gets them relegated,”

Now as far fetched as his desire might be, it just goes to show th type of rivalry we should expect from La Liga next season. Mourinho will definitely put sting back in the el clasico just like he did with Inter rivals Roma, Milan and Juventus.
