Ranieri Post Match Reaction: “The team is there”

“We proved that the team is there: we fought for every ball and it was an important and deserved victory. Let’s not forget that Lille hadn’t lost away from home in 13 games,” began Claudio Ranieri as he commented on the win over Lille at the Meazza.

“We haven’t qualified yet but we’re close,” the coach added. “We know that we’re in for a tough season in Serie A but we’ll always be in the mix.”

On Diego Milito, who finally got himself back on the score sheet:
“I would have given all the gold in the world to see him score. It came for him because of his immense will power: he never got downbeat, he worked hard and he deserved his goal. I could see that he was fired up and that he hadn’t let the miss get to him. I could see he was running and battling for the ball. He never gave up and in the end the goal came for him. But I would have battled with him right to the end; I would never have taken him off.”

“Every win is important, especially as we haven’t had too many of them,” smiled Ranieri when asked whether this was his most important win with Inter so far. “This side has its pride and its feelings. They fought hard and it’s not true that they fight harder in Europe than in the league: at the moment a “yes-no” ball becomes a “yes” ball in the Champions League, but it will soon be like that in the league too. We must carry the good things we’re doing in Europe back into Serie A and get a run of results going. The Champions League erases our bad luck. Whether this is the turning point is up to us.”

Ranieri was also asked about the occasional defensive lapses still seen: “I hope they will slowly disappear as we start putting results together; consistency helps eradicate all lapses.”
