Inter Milan responded to Sampdoria’s 4-1 thrashing of Bologna by beating Catania 2-1 at the San Siro to take them top of the Serie A. This came after a hard fought battle against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League last Tuesday.
Inter now have 22 points from 9 games 2 ahead of 2nd placed Sampdoria. With more fixtures to be played later on Sunday, these two teams can rest assured that the chasing pack of Juve, Fiorentina, and Milan still won’t pose any real danger of spoiling their party.
Again Inter showed just why they are considered the main title contenders this season. 2 goals form Sulley Muntari and Wesley Sneijder was enough to get the job done and deflect the attention from their dismal European performances at least for now.
Mourinho should be wary however of Fiorentina and Sampdoria. These are the two teams that seem to be giving him sleepless nights considering the fact that Fiorentina is doing well both at home and in Europe. Also Sampdoria have shown that they are not the league minnows. They stunned Inter earlier on in the season when they beat them at home.
Jose knows all to well what this club is capable of. They way i see it, Inter’s game plan for the Serie a looks pretty solid and Mourinho should not be worried at the moment. However, the fans growing discontent at their European performances should give him a little chill in his spine.
Another bad showing against Kiev this time in Russia could very well mark the end of the ‘special one’s’ career in Italy. This will give the likes of Juve, Fiorentina, Milan and Sampdoria the chance to capitalise on Inter’s woes. Indeed match day 4 will be reckoning day for Inter.
I am sure that a loss for Inter will definitely spell doom for Mourinho. The question however is can Inter find a replacement who is able to give them what they dearly want? The last time Inter won the Champions league was way back in … i can’t even remember. It’s been too long and their current European form ain’t pleasing at all. There is need for balance in Inter’s form.
