Steven Gerrard Rumors Will Not Go Away

by David on January 15, 2010

When I first heard the rumor that Inter was interested in signing Steven Gerrard I have to say I did not give it much credence. Gerrard is a Liverpool kid, is playing for his childhood team and is their captain. The idea of Gerrard leaving was something that I could not envision.

But the rumors have persisted for months now, and while I think the odds on Gerrard being in an Inter shirt next season as less than 30%.

That being said, it is no secret that Jose Mourinho is a big Gerrard fan. He came close to signing the player when he was manager at Chelsea. And reports say that Inter made a £40million bid for Gerrard during the summer.

So why would Liverpool sell one of their best players? As a result of Liverpool’s takeover several season ago by two U.S. businessman the team now has a sizeable debt that needs to get serviced.

Liverpool is a team short on cash and if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season, a very real possibility, they may be faced to sell one of their major stars.

Why would Gerrard consider going to Serie A? Stevie G is a Liverpool kid and I don’t think he can see himself wearing the shirt of another English team. But Gerrard is a player who is desperate to win trophies and knows that his window to do it in England in closing. So if he wants to win titles, then he will need to move overseas and Serie A and La Liga are his likely two destinations.

With his style of play I believe that Gerrard is more suited to Serie A than La Liga and that is one of the reasons why this rumor has legs.

As I said earlier I cannot see Liverpool selling Gerrard, but if they do, then he is probably more likely to land in Serie A than anywhere else. And that destination could be Inter.
