Inter have announced that midfielder Marcelo Brozovic suffered a broken toe during Sunday’s 1-0 Serie A loss to Juventus.
The midfielder had been complaining of pain in his right foot and X-rays on Tuesday confirmed that he has sustained a fracture.
“Marcelo Brozovic underwent an x-ray on his right foot on Tuesday after he picked up an injury in Sunday’s game against Juventus,” Inter said in a statement.
“The procedure showed that Brozovic has sustained a fracture to one of the bones in his fourth toe.
“The Croatian’s condition will be evaluated over the coming weeks.”
Initial reports suggest he will certainly miss Inter’s next two matches against Empoli and Bologna, while he is a doubt for the clash with Roma at San Siro on February 26.
The injury is another blow for Inter as they are already without key forwards Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic, who were given two-match bans for their actions at the end of the Juventus match. Icardi made comments to the referee at the end of the game and kicked the ball away, while Perisic was sent off for dissent in stoppage time.
Brozovic’s injury should open the door for Joao Mario to get a run of games in that attacking role he likes, just behind the striker.
