On This Day: Inter To Retire Javier Zanetti’s Number

Four years ago today, Inter announced that they would be retiring the number worn by legend Javier Zanetti. The longer we get from this decision, the greater the career and accomplishments of Zanetti seem.

Inter Milan have decided to withdraw the No. 4 jersey in recognition of the career of Javier Zanetti, who becomes the club’s new vice president from Tuesday.

Zanetti’s 18-year playing career with the Nerazzurri officially ends on Monday, when his final playing contract expires. With him, the No. 4 shirt he had worn over those years will also go into retirement with no Inter play set to inherit his number in future.

“The advisory board have decided to withdraw the No. 4 shirt,” Inter president Erick Thohir confirmed to reporters in Milan. “Zanetti is now going to be our vice president for the next two years.”
