Mazzarri: ‘We weren’t ourselves’

Mazzarri-InterWalter Mazzarri concedes Inter were poor in their 1-0 defeat to Milan. “We weren’t ourselves, the tension got to us.”

Inter did not have a single shot on target throughout the entire Derby della Madonnina tonight.

“We didn’t play well tonight, as everyone saw. We did better in the first half, but cared so much about this game that we used up a lot of nervous energy beforehand. We weren’t ourselves.

“Unfortunately this season has been up and down. Milan were more vehement in the tackle and first to the ball, so they won,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were all downhearted and there was nothing to say. I already have in mind what I will say to the team tomorrow morning. We have to put this behind us, learn from it and prepare for Lazio.

“Now we have to try and get as high up the table as possible, the situation is still in our hands and we’ve got to play better than this.”

The Nerazzurri’s Europa League spot is no longer looking secure, as they are only two points clear of Torino and three away from Milan and Parma.

Lazio and Verona are five points adrift and still in the running for a top six finish too.

“We didn’t allow Milan that much. We weren’t sharp, were not decisive enough in attack and should’ve been more concentrated on their set plays.

“It is one of those seasons. We need to play the last two games differently and forget this derby. We weren’t fast down the wings, nor quick making vertical passes. Milan had more adrenaline and conviction tonight.

“I think some of the players who were not accustomed to the Milan Derby atmosphere were so tense beforehand that they arrived wiped out to the game itself. Anyone who has played will know that mentality can make your legs feel heavy.

“All season I have been telling the lads they are incapable of controlling a game. I thought we did ok in the first half and I wanted a victory, but we were slow and clumsy. The tension got to us.”

Mazzarri was asked about the role of Mateo Kovacic, who had been more impressive in recent outings.

“Kovacic had a decent game. In these cases a Coach has to focus on the team and not individuals. In fact, the more experienced players should’ve helped him out. I take my responsibility for this performance and we will analyse it together.

“I hope our frustration at this performance can be channelled into the next two matches.”

And that’s why Zanetti should have been in there

If I was INTER’s Boss the next minute after the derby I would have called WM telling him you are fired. He is to blame for the very poor performances during this season. INTER are not a team that goes out to control the opponents. That is WM’s style. With the players he has available and with the youngsters he always avoided to introduce, he should have done much better throughout the season. He makes INTER feel inferior to the opponents instead of make them believe they can beat evry team in the world. It has been over 10 years that INTER failed to address at least one single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes. The only thing abiati did yesterday was to block a dangerous cross from Nagatomo. To conclude I think that WM is to be fired.
