After failing to secure another central defender during the summer Mercato, it is not surprising to see that Inter are being linked with a move for an experienced defender in January. What is disappointing are the two players Inter are linked with: Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala and Thomas Vermaelen of Barcelona.
Mangala was one of Inter’s top targets this past summer but the two clubs were unable to reach an agreement on the loan fee and the percentage of Mangala’s wages that Inter would have to pay.
But according to Tuttosport, the two clubs never really stopped negotiating about the possibility of a loan deal and with Mangala making just one 19-minute appearance for Manchester City in the Premier League and two EFL Cup outings, City are desperate a deal.
Another alternative is the over-the-hill, injury-prone Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, who Barcelona are desperate to move.
The Belgium international spent last season on loan at Roma last season, where he struggled with pace, injuries and red cards. There was nothing in his time at Roma to indicate that he would be a upgrade over Andrea Ranocchia in January.
