Manchester United have been desperate to sell full-back Matteo Darmian for the past two years, and it looks like Inter have finally landed the former Italian international. The twist in the story is that Damian is not arriving this month.
No, the defender has reportedly agreed to join Inter in 2020 on a free transfer, when his contract expires at Manchester United.
The 29-year-old has continually been linked with moves back to Italy throughout his four seasons at Old Trafford. Damian gas made just 92 appearances in his four years at United – including just seven last term.
However, he has never been first choice at the club and has slipped further down the pecking order this summer thanks to the €50m signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
He had been expected to join Juventus but now looks set to reunite with former Italy CT Antonio Conte. Damian is a perfect fit for Conte’s 3-5-2 formation, and the former Torino defender would fit the bill.
It is remarkable to me that Damian is still at United. His current wages of £45,000 a week is not huge by todays standards, and could be easily met by one of the big teams in Serie A.
On paper Damian is a perfect fit for Conte’s system, but it makes me nervous to be signing wide players who are 30, and have not shown any desire to play for the last four season.
