Interesting to see that according to Corriere dello Sport, Inter have done a u-turn on the future of Ivan Perisic and instead of selling the winger to Manchester United that Inter are instead going to offer Perisic a new contract.
Perisic has been heavily linked with a big money move to Jose Mourinho and Manchester United with many expecting it to happen this week, as Inter need to sell in order to meet UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules.
That Perisic is staying, impacts several deals that Inter have been working on.
Without Perisic’s sale it implies that Inter are confident that they can meet the FFP target this week buy selling other players. Probably Ever Banaga to PSG and either Stevan Jovetić and/or Marcelo Brozović to other clubs.
That Perisic is staying also implies that Inter are no longer in the market for Fiorentina talent Federico Bernardeschi.
The Italy Under-21 international is refusing to sign a new contract with Fiorentina and has been linked with a move to Inter for months.
I wrote earlier this month that it looked like Inter was going to sell Perisic to Manchester United for around €50m and then turn around and hand that fee to Fiorentina for Bernardeschi.
So a like for like deal, where Inter would have basically sold a 28-year-old and replaced him with a 23-year-old Italian. The stats last season for both players were almost identical.
Instead it looks like Luciano Spalletti got his wish and that Inter are staying with Perisic.
Is that a good thing?
