Referee Nicola Rizzoli continues to inflict damage on Inter’s hopes for a top four finish this season. Not satisfied with denying Inter not one, but two, clear penalties in the Derby d’Italia on Sunday, Rizzoli’s post match report has seen Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic both be handed two match suspensions.
Perisic was sent-off in stoppage time, and the Lega Serie A has today announced he’ll face a two-game ban for “repeatedly uttering gravely disrespectful expressions” aimed at the referee.
Despite not having been dismissed during the game, Icardi has been given the same punishment for “insulting expressions” aimed at Rizzoli with “accompanying gestures”.
In addition, it was determined that the Nerazzurri captain “kicked a ball in the direction of the referee, without hitting him” and a €10,000 fine was handed to the striker.
Inter have confirmed they are considering whether or not to appeal against the punishments and will make a decision after receiving the referee’s report.
Inter’s statement on Monday read:
“Following the disciplinary sanctions levied against its players Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic, Internazionale would like to announce that the club has asked to view the referee’s report before deciding whether or not to formally appeal.”
Speaking after the match, head coach Stefano Pioli said Inter had “paid dearly for the errors” made by Rizzoli in the match.
