A smiling Luciano Spalletti praised his players as Inter beat Cagliari 2-0 at the San Siro, and underlined the fact he wants the club to return to the level of the glory days.
The Nerazzurri coach also pointed out the great performances of the squad players and the impact of Lautaro Martinez.
“We deserved the three points,” he told the press. “Lautaro was the main man, he can play with Mauro Icardi, of course, he is strong, and has great decision making, but the team at the moment cannot afford to play with two strikers.
“Borja Valero, Dalbert, and Lautaro all played well, we had great responses from those who play less.”
Despite the win, Spalletti was also critical of his team and felt the defence got them out of jail on numerous occasions.
“We lost possession too many times,” Spalletti continued, “but tonight our defenders managed to cover up for the mistakes of the rest of the players. We need to grow under the aspect of knowing how to control the game in certain phases of the match.
“We conceded very little, but we should have done better in possession to avoid taking the risks.
The coach underlined the importance of taking Inter back to were the club belongs.
“With Inter it’s a matter of mentality and pressure,” he continued, “the pressure to take the club back to where it’s used to be in the history of Inter.
“Juventus are at a point now where the club, the coach, the players know what it takes to be at the top level. We’re still working on this, we must feel this sense of belonging to Inter, to work day to day to take Inter where it belongs.”
