Three years ago, Inter signed midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia for €40m from Monaco. All summer Inter had been linked with a move for Manchester City’s aging star Yaya Toure and had made what at the time was the right decision and that as to sign Kondogbia over Toure. In this interview, Inter President Erick Thohir explains why he believes that was the right choice.
Inter president Erick Thohir believes the club made the right choice in signing Geoffrey Kondogbia instead of Yaya Toure this summer.
The Manchester City man had looked destined to depart the Premier League after his agent claimed he was “90 per cent certain to leave” in May with Inter subsequently claiming they were ready to close the deal .
The Nerazzuri were heavily linked with a move for Toure, with Roberto Mancini recently insisting he wasn’t giving up on a deal despite the Ivorian insisting he will “definitely stay” at the Etihad Stadium.
Inter instead completed a reported €40 million [£28.4m] deal with Monaco for Kondogbia, with the in-demand France international signing on a five-year contract after passing a medical on Monday.
“Kondogbia is much younger than Toure, and can become a much better player with time,” the Indonesian declared to reporters. “Geoffrey will become the cornerstone of a young and strong project.
“I’d like to welcome Kondogbia to the club. It was wonderful to see the fans giving him such an enthusiastic welcome today, showing how much they love Inter.
“We want to create a great side, and now it’s up to the players to bring the results.”
Kondogbia is now the most expensive signing of Thohir’s reign as president, with the objective for the club to improve on last term’s eighth-placed finish in Serie A that saw Mancini’s side fail to qualify for Europe.
For once I agree with Erik Thohir. Kondogbia is a much better long-term signing than Toure would have been. Toure would have helped Inter for possibly the next two years, while the 22-year-old Kongobia is someone who can lead the Inter defense for the next decade.
What do you think of Thohir’s comments? Would you rather have Kondogbia or Toure?
