On This Day: Wanda Says Icardi Going Nowhere This Summer

I wrote this exactly two years ago today, and the Wanda could be saying the same thing today as she said then. She wants Mauro to stay at Inter, and get a nice pay raise too.

Despite a lot of interest from clubs in England and Spain, Mauro Icardi’s wife and agent Wanda Nara has assured fans that the Nerazzurri captain is going nowhere this summer.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is a known admirer of Icardi and Nara has disclosed that she did in fact meet with officials from the La Liga club over a potential summer switch to the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

However, despite Icardi enjoying a close personal relationship with the Atleti tactician, as it stands, the 23-year-old hitman wants to remain at the Serie A club.

“I talked to Atletico Madrid officials on behalf of Mauro,” she said. “There are so many offers but it’s hard to leave Inter.

“Atletico made an offer for Mauro but a departure is difficult due to his captain status and the fact we renewed our conditions last year.

“Lots of offers have come in and I’m talking to few frontrunners. Sure Mauro and Cholo will have spoken, they have crossed paths a few times- the last on a plane- but football wasn’t discussed.

“Atletico are really keen on Icardi. But he wants to stay at Inter.”

That is good news for all Inter fans. Icardi has scored 52 goals for Inter since joining from Sampdoria in July 2013 and at only 23 is still a couple of years away from his peak years, where he could be one of the best strikers in Europe.

Are you happy that Icardi is staying around for at least one more season? Surprised that talks with Atletico progressed far enough that they warranted a meeting?
